Guwahati, Sept 23: The second autopsy of Assam’s beloved singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg was completed at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Tuesday morning, following requests from his family amid growing calls for clarity around his death.

A four-member team of doctors from GMCH, Pragjyotishpur Medical College, and AIIMS Guwahati carried out the procedure under strict supervision. Senior officials from the state and district administration, along with top Assam Police officers and Health Department representatives, were present during the examination.

Outside GMCH, thousands of grieving admirers waited to pay their respects. Later, Zubeen’s body was taken to Sarusajai Stadium, where an even larger crowd gathered. His final journey to Sonapur will begin from the stadium, with arrangements made for family members to accompany the procession.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju will represent Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the funeral. Other dignitaries expected to attend include the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, the Leader of Opposition, representatives of Assam Sahitya Sabha, members of the All Assam Students’ Union, and former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who joined the mourners, recalled Zubeen’s unique place in Assamese hearts. “It is often said that dogs are a man’s best friend, and if dogs love you, you are a great man. For Iko, Diya, Rambo, and Maya, Zubeen was their family. Today, as they bid him farewell, they must have felt the same emotions we are feeling now—heartbroken,” he said.

In a gesture of respect, Dimoria College and the Daffodil Group of Institutions have contributed sandalwood for the funeral rites.

Paying his final tribute, the Chief Minister added: “We will never get another Zubeen Garg in the next 50 years at least. Singers may come from Mumbai, but none sang within the people like Zubeen did.”
