Dibrugarh, Sept 11: In a major setback to the banned militant outfit Ulfa (I), senior leader Mriganka Asom, alias Buddheshwar Gohai, surrendered before security forces along the Assam-Arunachal border.
Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of Assam Rifles and Tinsukia police moved into the area and took Mriganka Asom into custody. He is considered close to Rupam Asom, another top Ulfa (I) leader who was arrested earlier.
Police sources said the veteran militant, who joined the outfit in April 2010, had been serving as the operational commander of the group’s 779 camp. At the time of his surrender, he was carrying sophisticated weaponry, including an MQ series rifle, three magazines with 90 live rounds, and a hand grenade.
Currently in Tinsukia police custody, Mriganka Asom is being interrogated. Security officials described his surrender as a significant blow to the outfit.
“After the arrest of Rupam Asom, Ulfa (I) has been facing a huge leadership crisis. Rupam was a top commander who had carried out several activities in Tinsukia and Arunachal areas. His arrest weakened their leadership, and now Mriganka’s surrender has further crippled their operations,” a senior police officer said.
Police sources added that Rupam Asom and Mriganka Asom had jointly executed several militant activities along the Assam-Arunachal belt. Following Rupam’s arrest, security forces gathered crucial leads that helped in tracking down and apprehending other cadres, including Mriganka.
