Tura, Jan 31: The 5-Day sesquicentenary celebrations of the Garo Baptist Convention (GBC) began on Wednesday at Bethel A.bri ABDK Permanent Campsite, Balupara, West Garo Hills.
The first day started with arrivals and registration of the delegates. The inaugural worship service was led by Rev. Dalim S. Sangma, followed by Key note address by Sundar Sangma, President of GBC. The event was further enriched by the melodious renditions by Sadolpara Church and Daddengre Church choirs.
Hundreds of faithful gathered to pray and partake in the celebrations on Wednesday. Over 16,000 faithfuls are expected to attend the event over the course of 5 days. The sesquicentenary celebrations will conclude on February 4.
The Garo Baptist Convention (GBC) is one and a half century old umbrella organization of Garo baptist churches of Meghalaya, Goalpara and Kamrup district of Assam. It is also known as the A’chik Baptist Dal’gipa Krima (ABDK) in Garo. GBC represents over 2,600 churches including 309 mother churches with nearly 400,000 baptised members and approximately 200,000 unbaptised members.
The Garo Baptist Convention was established in the year 1874. Organizationally, the Garo Baptist Convention has grown to one of the largest Baptist conventions under Asia Pacific Baptist Federation and Baptist World Alliance.
