Shillong-origin Polo Hotels to develop Silchar’s first five-star property with ₹103 crore investment

Must read

Guwahati, March 8: Polo Hotels Group, a hospitality brand that traces its origins to Meghalaya’s capital Shillong, is set to develop the first five-star luxury hotel in Silchar with an investment of around ₹103 crore, marking a major step in strengthening tourism and business infrastructure in Assam’s Barak Valley.

The project has received approval from the Assam Cabinet.

Founded in Shillong in 1991, the Polo Hotels Group has grown from a Meghalaya-based hospitality venture into one of Northeast India’s most prominent hotel chains. The company continues to maintain its registered office at Hotel Polo Towers near Polo Grounds in Shillong, a landmark property that helped establish organised luxury hospitality in the region.

From its beginnings in Meghalaya, the group has gradually expanded across the Northeast and eastern India. The company has 8 hotels now, 2 are undergoing full upgradation, and 6 are in the pipeline.

The upcoming Silchar property will introduce international-standard luxury hospitality infrastructure to the Barak Valley for the first time. Silchar, the commercial and administrative hub of southern Assam, has long lacked premium accommodation capable of hosting large-scale events, corporate meetings, and high-value travel.

The proposed hotel will feature around 100 premium rooms and suites designed to meet global hospitality standards while incorporating elements reflecting the cultural character of the Barak Valley. The hotel will take 2-3 years to complete. “We are working hard to achieve this with our team’s experience and expertise”, an official said.

Facilities planned for the property include multiple speciality restaurants and bars, a resort-style swimming pool, a full-service spa and wellness centre, a modern fitness facility, and state-of-the-art banquet and conference infrastructure capable of hosting corporate summits, exhibitions, weddings, and government events.

Industry analysts note that India’s hospitality sector has witnessed a strong rebound in recent years. Tourism estimates indicate that the country recorded more than 2.3 billion domestic tourist visits in 2023, while demand for MICE tourism—meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions—has expanded rapidly across emerging regional cities.

Deval Tibrewalla, Chief Executive Officer of Polo Hotels Group, said the Silchar project reflects the company’s strategy of developing high-quality hospitality infrastructure in emerging cities across the Northeast.

“Silchar is one of the most important gateway cities in Northeast India, and the hospitality infrastructure required to support its growing economic and institutional importance. This project is not just about building a hotel; it is about enabling the next phase of growth for the Barak Valley,” Tibrewalla said.

“As a company rooted in the Northeast, we see it as our responsibility to bring world-class experiences to emerging cities and unlock their full potential. The Silchar hotel, along with our expanding pipeline across the region, reflects our long-term commitment to building the largest and most trusted hospitality platform in Northeast India,” he added.

Alongside the Silchar development, the group is currently building additional hotels across several states, significantly expanding its footprint across eastern and northeastern India.

Hospitality infrastructure projects of this scale typically generate significant multiplier effects across local economies. Industry estimates suggest that each hotel room can create around two direct jobs, along with additional employment across sectors such as food supply chains, transportation, event management, and local services.

The Silchar project is therefore expected to generate substantial direct and indirect employment opportunities while supporting local businesses and service providers across the Barak Valley.

Once operational, the hotel is expected to establish a new benchmark for luxury hospitality in southern Assam, enabling Silchar to host national-level conferences, corporate gatherings, policy meetings, and destination events that were previously constrained by the absence of premium accommodation.
