Shillong’s Rilbong Link Promises Smoother Commutes

Must read

Shillong, April 11: In a city where traffic often defines the day, even a short stretch of road can change the rhythm. That is exactly what the newly inaugurated Rilbong link road aims to do in Shillong.

Inaugurated on Saturday by Sanbor Shullai, the road connects the existing PWD route near Rilbong, cuts through the Rilbong Community Hall area, and extends up to the Umshyrpi Bridge, offering direct access to the four-lane highway.

Built at a cost of ₹4.35 crore under the PWD SPA Scheme 2021–22, the project includes widening, metaling, and blacktopping of a stretch that had long been seen as a bottleneck for local commuters.

For residents, the significance lies less in the numbers and more in the daily grind. Rilbong sits at a crucial junction in Shillong’s traffic flow, and even minor disruptions here tend to ripple across the city.

The new link is expected to ease that pressure by offering an alternative route and reducing congestion during peak hours.

Local traditional bodies, including representatives from Dorbar Shnongs, were present at the inauguration, underlining how closely urban infrastructure and community spaces are intertwined in the city.

Shillong’s roads have long struggled to keep pace with its growing population and rising vehicle numbers. Projects like this may not grab headlines for scale, but on the ground, they often make the most immediate difference.

For now, the expectation is simple. A smoother drive, a little less waiting, and a city that moves just a bit easier.
