Shylla launched Swasth Nari Sashakt Parivar Abhiyan in 100 bedded MCH hospital

Shillong, Sept 17: Meghalaya health minister Wailadmiki Shylla launched the Swasth Nari Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan campaign at the 100 bedded MCH Hospital, Panaliar in Jowai on Wednesday.

The programme was organised by the office of the District Medical & Health Officer, Jowai

The campaign was implemented nationwide from September 17 to October 2, 2025 with a focus on strengthening healthcare for women and children.

Speaking on the occasion, Wailadmiki Shylla highlighted that Meghalaya State stands out as a matrimonial society, where respect for women and strong family values is deeply rooted. Despite this, maternal mortality remains a significant concern.

Shylla encouraged the women to visit nearby health centres during the campaign to access free check ups, nutrition support and essential medicines during the campaign.

He also called for government departments, healthcare institutions and community leaders to raise awareness and ensure the campaign reaches every household.

The minister discouraged early marriage, highlighting that it jeopardizes the health of adolescent girls and can destabilise families.

He urged the youths to delay marriage until the appropriate age to protect their health.

Vevotolu Kezo, (SDO Sardar), WJHs, highlighted the vital connection between women’s health empowerment, emphasising that a healthy woman forms the foundation of a strong family and an empowered society.

She noted that the campaigns focus on health, nutrition and education is crucial for the wellbeing of future generations.

She stressed that this campaign is very much needed and encouraged women to actively participate by visiting their nearest health centres to access screenings, check-ups and preventive service.

She highlighted that this initiative is not just a district or state level event, but part of a nationwide campaign.

She explained that health goes beyond treatment and curing illness, preventive and early screening are equally important.

She also drew attention to the high prevalence of cancer in the Northeast, highlighting the importance of cancer screening during the campaign.

Dr. Helen J Uriah, District Maternal & Child health Officer, highlighted the various activities to be undertaken during the campaign including screenings for women and children, immunization drives, awareness programmes on nutrition and hygiene, Tuberculosis screening, Screening for anaemia for adolescent girls and women and counselling centre, Antenatal Care (ANC), Blood donation drive, enrolment under MHIS, Nikshay Mitra volunteers and ABHA registration.

Dr. P. Shylla, District Medical & Health Officer, presided over the programme.

Dr. M Syngkon, Additional DMHO delivered the welcomed address and Dr. S Suja, District Nodal Officer NVHCP proposed the vote of thanks.
