Sikkim: Tourists missing since April 21 on Goechala trek, yet to be traced

Must read

Gangtok, May 1: Sandeepan Roy, a 31-year-old resident of Baramohan Singh, Indra Pally, Kadamtala, Darjeeling (Ranidanga), has been missing since April 21 while on the Goechala trekking route in West Sikkim. Despite ongoing search efforts, his whereabouts remain unknown.

Roy had embarked on the trek on April 19, accompanied by six other Indian tourists and a guide, Sanchaman Subba of Yuksam. The expedition was organised by local tour operator Basanta Subba of Smile Sikkim, Yuksam.

The group reached near Thangshing on the evening of April 21, when it was discovered that Roy was missing. The group’s immediate search efforts failed to locate him. Poor mobile network connectivity at Tshoka further delayed effective communication with the authorities.

A 14-member search and rescue team was dispatched to Thangshing on April 23. However, Roy remains untraced. His family members have since reached Yuksam and are staying there as the search continues.

To bolster the ongoing efforts, an official request was submitted to the Commandant of the 72nd Battalion, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Khecheopalri, and the Commanding Officer of the 2nd Battalion, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Darap, for the immediate deployment of additional personnel. The joint operation aims to intensify the search at Thangshing.

Given the challenging terrain and communication issues in the region, teams have been equipped with satellite phones and Very High Frequency (VHF) wireless sets to ensure continuous communication during the operation.

On April 30, a fresh search and rescue team comprising 8 SSB jawans, 4 NDRF personnel, and 2 policemen from the Yuksam outpost departed for Thangshing. Additionally, a reserve force of 12 SSB jawans, under the supervision of a deputy commandant, has been stationed at Yuksam for any emergent deployment.

Thangshing is approximately a two-day trek from Yuksam, typically involving a night halt at Tshoka.

The entire operation is being closely supervised by Tshering Sherpa, Superintendent of Police, Gyalshing District, to ensure systematic and prioritised search efforts.
