Shillong, June 26: North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) recently became a hub for young innovators, hosting an Orientation Workshop on “Solve for Tomorrow”. Held on June 23, 2025, at the university’s Golden Jubilee auditorium in Shillong, the workshop focused on “Design Thinking” and was a collaborative effort by NEHU’s Entrepreneurship Development Centre, the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) from IIT Delhi, and Samsung.
The event attracted a diverse audience, including students, faculty, schoolchildren, and aspiring young entrepreneurs aged 14-22 from across Meghalaya. The primary goal of the workshop was to equip participants with essential problem-solving, critical thinking, and ideation skills through engaging, hands-on Design Thinking methodologies.
Prof. Dinesh Bhatia, Head of NEHU’s Entrepreneurship Development Centre, underscored the significance of such initiatives. In his opening remarks, he highlighted how these events align with the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020’s focus on promoting entrepreneurship, startups, and innovation within educational institutions. He emphasized the long-term societal benefits expected from the outcomes of such programs. Prof. Bhatia also extended his gratitude to the Samsung and IIT Delhi teams for bringing the event to Meghalaya and thanked all attendees for their enthusiastic participation.
Vanita Vasudev from FITT, IIT Delhi, introduced the key themes for this year’s “Solve for Tomorrow” challenge: AI for a safer, smarter, and more inclusive Bharat; Social change through Sport & Tech: For Education and Better Futures; The future of health, hygiene, and wellbeing in India; Environmental Sustainability via technology.
Vasudev addressed specific queries from participants regarding the competition. Interactive sessions throughout the workshop saw enthusiastic engagement, with prizes and awards distributed to attendees.
A special recognition was given by Samsung to a NEHU team comprising Bashankur Buhroy and Eleazer. This duo had previously competed in the Samsung “Solve for Tomorrow” challenge in 2024, achieving a remarkable feat by ranking among the top 50 participants nationwide.
The “Solve for Tomorrow” challenge offers substantial incentives for successful entries, with prizes ranging from Rs. 4 lakhs up to a grand prize of Rs. 1 crore for the top four winning teams. Beyond monetary awards, successful teams will benefit from invaluable mentorship at state-of-the-art labs at IIT Delhi, participate in innovation bootcamps organized by Samsung R&D Centres, and gain opportunities to connect with investors to transform their innovative ideas into tangible realities.
