Dibrugarh, Nov 24: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday reviewed the functioning of the Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited (BVFCL) at Namrup and took stock of the progress of the upcoming Assam Valley Fertilizer & Chemicals Company Limited (AVFCCL) plant — a key project for boosting fertilizer production in the North East.

Sonowal was received by BVFCL Director (Finance) Subhash Chandra Das and accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour by CISF on his arrival at the factory premises.

During a detailed review meeting, BVFCL officials — including Das and General Manager (Marketing) Satyajit Mishra — presented the current production status, marketing operations, and future expansion plans. They underlined the crucial role of the Namrup-III unit, currently the only urea-producing fertilizer plant in the entire region and a major employment provider.

Das highlighted BVFCL’s contribution in ensuring urea availability to farmers across the North East and stressed the need for sustained operations to support agricultural growth.

Sonowal assessed the project roadmap for the AVFCCL plant, which he said stands as a testament to the priority placed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on industrial growth in the North East. He urged faster execution to unlock new markets and export opportunities for fertilizers from Assam.

Calling for improved synergy with agricultural departments and universities, the Minister advised Team BVFCL to “work cohesively” and align their efforts with national fertilizer needs. “We must work together and not in silos to ensure the growth of the region and bring further glory to Namrup as a prominent industrial town,” he said.

Senior government officials, including MLA Teras Gowala, APL Chairman Bikul Deka, and representatives from the district administration also attended the review.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Sonowal said BVFCL was “going strong” and on track to achieve its targets this year. He thanked the Prime Minister for approving the new fertilizer plant and reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to strengthening the sector in the North East.
