Tura, June 18: Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma on Thursday inaugurated five newly constructed private rooms at Tura Christian Hospital (TCH), boosting the institution’s capacity and pledging support for its planned expansion into a 100-bed healthcare facility.

The new air-conditioned private rooms, inaugurated at a ceremony held at the Mission Compound in Tura, increase the hospital’s operational capacity from 74 to 79 beds, strengthening healthcare services for patients across Garo Hills and neighbouring parts of Assam.
The programme began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the hospital campus, followed by a dedication prayer led by Rev. Waiping K. Marak, Executive Secretary of Krima-IV, Tura.
Addressing the gathering as chief guest, Speaker Sangma praised the hospital’s management and medical staff for their continued service to the region and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure in western Meghalaya.

In a significant announcement, he pledged financial support towards the hospital’s long-term modernisation plan, aimed at upgrading Tura Christian Hospital into a fully functional 100-bed facility in the near future.
Medical Superintendent Dr. Editha W. Momin, in her welcome address, thanked Speaker Sangma and former MP Agatha K. Sangma for their substantial personal contributions towards the completion of the new facility. She also acknowledged the support of individual donors who funded key infrastructure, including a heavy-duty generator and specialised air-conditioning systems.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Momin said the expansion would help meet the growing healthcare needs of patients from across Garo Hills as well as neighbouring districts of Assam that rely on the hospital for medical services.
Dr. Minakshi A. Sangma, Chairman of the ADMC at Tura Christian Hospital, highlighted the institution’s long-term vision for healthcare expansion and improved medical delivery in the region.

The event was attended by community leaders, healthcare professionals and well-wishers, with staff nurse Tarime M. Marak presenting a special musical performance to mark the occasion.
The latest expansion marks another step in Tura Christian Hospital’s efforts to enhance healthcare access in western Meghalaya, as the institution moves towards its ambitious goal of becoming a 100-bed referral healthcare centre for the region.
