Nongpoh, June 29: What began as a Sunday leisure ride turned tragic for a group of youngsters when a speeding car met with a serious accident along the Umsning Bypass near Umkaliar around 5 PM on Sunday, along National Highway 6 (NH 6) in Ri Bhoi District.

It may be mentioned that despite repeated efforts by the Ri Bhoi Police in raising awareness about the dangers of over speeding and reckless driving, particularly among young bikers, such warnings continue to fall on deaf ears. Even though police have levied numerous fines and carried out awareness drives, but risky stunts and high-speed races remain a growing concern on National Highway 6 during weekends.

Regular commuters on NH-6 have voiced serious concerns over the increasing number of youngsters, primarily aged between 18 and 20 years, who frequently use stretches between Umran, Sumer, and Umsning Bypass as a racing track, performing stunts and engaging in dangerous manoeuvres, especially on Saturdays and Sundays.

On Sunday afternoon, witnesses reported that a large group of bikers were racing and performing stunts on the highway around 5 PM. Amidst this chaotic scene, a Maruti Ignis (ML 05W 7020), driven by a young man and carrying three other occupants, lost control at high speed. The vehicle rammed into the road divider and rolled over multiple times before coming to a halt.

The driver and one occupant sustained injuries while two others fled the scene. On receiving the information, Umsning Police along with the 108 ambulance services reached the spot and transported the injured person to Umsning CHC hospital.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway even as authorities have reiterated the importance of responsible driving and urged parents and communities to help curb the dangerous trend of thrill-seeking stunts on public roads.
