Speeding car slams into vehicle of North Shillong MLA near Nehru Park

Shillong, July 6: A speeding car driven recklessly under the influence of alcohol caused a multi-vehicle collision near Nehru Park, Umiam, on Sunday evening. One of the vehicles involved was a Scorpio belonging to North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum, who was inside the car along with his wife, children and a relative at the time of the incident.

According to reports, a Maruti Espresso bearing registration number ML05AB 8537 first rammed into a Maruti car (ML05C 6579) before crashing into the MLA’s Scorpio.

Fortunately, no one suffered serious injuries. However, all three vehicles were damaged in the incident.

Speaking to reporters, MLA Adelbert Nongrum confirmed that the accident was caused by the driver of the Maruti Espresso, who was allegedly drunk and driving at high speed. He expressed relief that, by the grace of God, he, his wife, their children and their relative Kiaw escaped unhurt. He added that while his wife and mother in law experienced some physical discomfort from the impact, his children were visibly shaken and burst into tears from the shock of the accident.

He also mentioned that the occupants of both the Maruti cars, including women and men, did not sustain any injuries.

Police from Umiam Police Station quickly arrived at the scene, arranged for medical checkups for those involved, and have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
