Tura, Jan 20: As part of the celebrations leading up to the 54th Meghalaya Day, the District Administration of West Garo Hills on Tuesday organised a drawing, painting and sketching competition at DC Park, Tura, providing students a creative platform to express the state’s cultural identity and heritage.

The competition saw the participation of 20 students from various schools across the district, who were challenged to visually interpret Meghalaya’s culture, heritage, eminent personalities and tourist destinations. Participants were given one hour to translate their ideas into artwork using different creative media.

Officials said the initiative was aimed at nurturing creativity among students while fostering a deeper emotional connection with the state and its rich legacy.

“We hope this exercise will help inculcate good values among students and encourage them to feel closer to their state—its personalities, culture and popular tourist destinations,” said Benjamin D. Tariang, MCS, Assistant Commissioner, West Garo Hills.

The artworks were evaluated by a panel of local art experts comprising Sembertush A. Sangma, a renowned artist and recipient of the U Tirot Sing Award 2025 for his contributions to arts and literature; Bandi Chambugong, known for his versatility in painting and specialised cement artwork; and Rabuga M. Marak, a young emerging artist whose work documents Garo folklore and indigenous lifestyles.

The results of the competition will be announced on January 21 during the formal 54th Meghalaya Day celebration at DC Park, Tura, officials said.
