Sumi Borah walks free in Assam’s biggest online trading scam

Must read

Dibrugarh, May 22: Sumi Borah, a popular actor and choreographer and one of the prime accused in the multi-crore online trading scam, was released from Dibrugarh Central Jail on Thursday evening after securing bail in all the cases registered against her.

Arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police on September 12, 2024, Borah spent over eight months in judicial custody. She had earlier obtained bail in cases filed at Dibrugarh (Case No. 352/24) and Duliajan (Case No. 198/24) police stations in April, but her release was delayed due to a pending bail plea in the Barbaruah case (Case No. 85/24). The Gauhati High Court granted her bail in the latter on May 21, paving the way for her release.

Borah walked out of the high-security prison at around 7:10 p.m., dressed in black and avoiding media queries.

The three cases against her were filed by duped investors who alleged they were promised unrealistic returns through an online trading scheme. The fraudulent operation, believed to be the largest financial scam in Assam, is currently under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Borah, along with her husband Tarkik Borah and 22-year-old Bishal Phukan—identified as the mastermind—allegedly orchestrated the scam that swindled hundreds across the state. The trio used their social influence and glamour to lure investors, projecting an image of success and credibility.

Both Phukan and Tarkik Borah were granted bail and released from jail on May 3 after spending eight months in custody. While Phukan walked out of Dibrugarh Central Jail, Tarkik was released from Guwahati Central Jail.

The scam came to light following Phukan’s arrest on September 3, 2024. Investigations revealed that the accused had diverted investor funds to shell companies while spending lavishly on luxury cars, five-star hotels, and designer jewelry. Social media posts by the trio showcased a lifestyle far removed from the financial ruin faced by their victims.
