Super El Nio 2026: Why India and the Northeast are watching closely

Must read

Scientists are warning that a potentially powerful El Nio could disrupt monsoons, intensify heatwaves and trigger extreme weather events across parts of India and the Northeast over the coming months.

A climate phenomenon developing far away in the Pacific Ocean is beginning to trigger concern across India, including the Northeast.

Global weather agencies and climate scientists are increasingly warning about the possible arrival of a strong – and potentially even “Super” – El Nio event later this year. Such events are known to alter rainfall patterns, intensify heatwaves and disrupt weather systems across large parts of the world.

For India, El Nio years are closely watched because they are often linked to weaker monsoons, erratic rainfall and prolonged heat conditions. In the Northeast too, changing monsoon behaviour, sudden floods, dry spells and temperature fluctuations could emerge as major concerns if global weather patterns become unstable.

The latest forecasts from the US Climate Prediction Center suggest there is now a strong probability of El Nio conditions developing and continuing into the later part of 2026. Some long-range climate models are even pointing towards the possibility of a “Super El Nio”, an unusually strong warming event in the Pacific Ocean.

El Nio occurs when sea surface temperatures in parts of the Pacific Ocean become unusually warm, disrupting atmospheric circulation and weather systems worldwide.

Historically, strong El Nio years have been associated with droughts, floods, crop stress, coral bleaching, forest fires and record-breaking temperatures across different parts of the world. The 1997-98 Super El Nio alone caused massive global economic losses and widespread climate disruption.

Scientists are especially worried because this possible El Nio is emerging at a time when global temperatures are already at record highs because of climate change.

Several researchers now warn that if El Nio strengthens further, 2026 could become one of the hottest years ever recorded globally.

Climate experts say the combination of global warming and El Nio can amplify extreme weather events, making heatwaves more intense and rainfall patterns more unpredictable.

At the same time, scientists caution that forecasts this early still carry uncertainty, and it remains too soon to confirm whether a full-scale “Super El Nio” will actually develop.

Still, growing warnings from global climate agencies are already turning Super El Nio 2026 into one of the world’s most closely watched climate stories.
