Williamnagar, Sept 17: Swastha Nari Sashakt Parivar Abhiyan, a nationwide initiative led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was launched at Williamnagar in Meghalaya on Wednesday.
The program, which translates to “Healthy Woman, Empowered Family,” is a key part of the government’s vision for a developed India by 2047, focusing on preventive healthcare for women.
The launch event in Williamnagar, East Garo Hills, brought together health officials, local leaders, and community members to promote screening, early detection, and awareness of critical health issues among women.

During her welcome address, Dr. Bichit Rani CH. Marak, Additional District Medical and Health Officer (Addl. DM&HO), set the tone for the event.
The initiative’s significance was further elaborated by Dr. C. E. N. Sangma, District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) for East Garo Hills, who provided a brief on the campaign’s goals.
Speaking to Hub News, Dr Sangma said, “The program is organized to empower women and to look after their personal health and family’s health, as well as to build a better society to live in”.

Dr. Sangma highlighted some of the challenges women face in Meghalaya, despite its Matrilineal society.
“Though a Matrilineal, Meghalaya women still face lots of problems,” he noted. “For example, in some delivery cases, the women need blood, and here the family members—from husband to others—deny to do so. But still, we are trying to counsel this gap.”
The call to action was echoed by Dr. J. B. K. Marak, Medical Superintendent of Williamnagar Civil Hospital, and R. P. Marak, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Williamnagar.
The speeches emphasized the importance of community support and individual responsibility in achieving the campaign’s objectives.

In a show of solidarity and empowerment, NCC cadets joined the program and donated blood to help women in need.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. A. A. Momin, DMCHO, East Garo Hills, underscoring the collaborative effort required to make the initiative a success.
