Tura, Sept 1: In a major breakthrough, the South West Garo Hills District Executive Force (SWGH DEF) has cracked a series of theft cases that have plagued the region in recent months, targeting both government and private properties.

According to Superintendent of Police Vikash Varma, the operation was launched following credible intelligence inputs. On August 29, a joint inter-state raid with Assam Police was carried out in Mankachar, leading to the arrest of 43-year-old Iftakul Islam of Thakuranbari, a village straddling the Assam–Meghalaya border.

A search of his premises resulted in the recovery of stolen property, including batteries, copper wires, an abrasive cutting machine, and other materials linked to multiple cases registered at Ampati Police Station. Police also seized a pick-up vehicle allegedly used to transport the stolen items.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Islam is part of an organized gang operating across Garo Hills and parts of Mankachar, systematically targeting installations and private establishments.

Building on the breakthrough, the DEF arrested two more suspects — Amirul Islam (23) and Shahidul Islam (26), both residents of Thakuranbari — on September 1. Efforts are underway to trace additional stolen property and nab the remaining absconding members of the gang.

Reiterating the district police’s resolve to combat organized crime, SP Varma urged community members to remain vigilant and extend cooperation to law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and security of the region.
