In a major push to safeguard the intellectual property of the Northeast’s traditional crafts, the North Eastern Handloom and Handicraft Development Corporation (NEHHDC) on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Textiles Committee, under the Ministry of Textiles, to strengthen Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protection through Geographical Indication (GI) registration and post-GI initiatives.

A two-day national-level conference of the Union Ministry of Textiles began on Thursday at Sonapur near Guwahati, with a strong focus on strengthening the textile sector, boosting exports, and unlocking the potential of handloom and handicrafts in the Northeast.

In a landmark step toward positioning Meghalaya’s traditional textiles on the national and global stage, the state will inaugurate the Integrated Textile Tourism Centre (ITTC) at the Handloom & Sericulture Complex in Nongpoh on December 6.
