Guwahati, Jan 8: In a major push to safeguard the intellectual property of the Northeast’s traditional crafts, the North Eastern Handloom and Handicraft Development Corporation (NEHHDC) on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Textiles Committee, under the Ministry of Textiles, to strengthen Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protection through Geographical Indication (GI) registration and post-GI initiatives.
The MoU was signed during the North Eastern Region Conclave held in Guwahati, marking a significant step towards protecting and promoting the region’s unique handloom and handicraft heritage.
Under the agreement, the two organisations will facilitate GI registration for 33 distinctive products, including 18 from Nagaland and 15 from Meghalaya, under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
Beyond registration, the partnership places strong emphasis on post-GI initiatives, focusing on capacity building, branding, and market linkages to ensure sustainable income generation for artisans and weavers. The initiative is expected to enhance global visibility of Northeastern crafts while preventing misuse and imitation of indigenous designs.
