Meghalaya's famed living root bridges have moved a step closer to securing UNESCO World Heritage status, with India's nomination of the Jingkieng Jri / Living Root Bridge Cultural Landscape being accepted for evaluation by the World Heritage Committee in 2027.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat for nominating the state's iconic Living Root Bridges, locally known as Jingkieng Jri, for UNESCO World Heritage Site recognition.
India's nomination dossier "Jingkieng Jri/ Lyu Chrai Cultural Landscape, Meghalaya" was formally submitted by HE Vishal V Sharma, Ambassador/Permanent Representative of India to UNESCO to Lazare Assomo Eloundou, Director of UNESCO's World Heritage Centre for consideration of possible inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage list in the 2026-27 evaluation cycle.
After nearly eight years of sustained effort, Meghalaya’s iconic Jingkieng Jri / Lyu Chrai Cultural Landscape, globally known for its living root bridges, has crossed a crucial milestone on the world heritage map.
