A merchant navy officer was killed on Thursday while fighting Kuki militants. He has been identified as Waikhom Nilakamal.

According to sources, the gunfight started at about 12 noon near Yaingangpokpi bazaar and continued for few hours.

In a statement issued on Thursday, NESO said it will hold a candlelight vigil in all state capitals on June 28, appealing all to shun violence so that peace and tranquillity will once again prevail in Manipur.
