Imphal, Sept 7: Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Saturday held an urgent meeting with senior BJP leaders, including former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to the state on September 13.
At least 23 BJP MLAs, accompanied by party president A. Sharda Devi, the Chief Security Advisor, and senior officials, joined the meeting at Raj Bhavan. The discussions, which lasted about 40 minutes, were described by sources as focused on ensuring “cooperation and coordination” ahead of the Prime Minister’s one-hour stopover in Imphal.

The meeting comes at a politically sensitive time, with Manipur under President’s Rule since ethnic violence broke out in May 2023. The presence of both Biren Singh and Speaker Satyabrata Singh—considered rivals for the chief ministerial post—has fuelled speculation about possible moves towards government formation.
Party sources admitted there is growing pressure within the BJP to restore an elected government before Modi’s arrival, his first since last year’s unrest. The leadership, they said, is under pressure to demonstrate “visible changes” in governance and law and order to the public.
While no formal announcement was made, the high-level consultations at Raj Bhavan have intensified political buzz in the state capital, with observers calling the timing “crucial” in shaping Manipur’s political course ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit.
