Teesta breach brings Sikkim’s tourist traffic to a halt as NH-10 submerges

Must read

Gangtok, July 31: With Sikkim witnessing heavy tourist inflow this season, authorities have issued a high alert after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of very heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours across Sikkim, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Jalpaiguri districts.

Travellers have been urged to avoid affected routes, especially landslide-prone zones.

The warning comes amid a major disruption as the Teesta River breached its embankment at 29th Mile, submerging a stretch of National Highway 10 (NH-10)—the key road linking Sikkim and Kalimpong with Siliguri in North Bengal. The flooding has brought vehicular movement to a standstill, stranding tourists and locals alike.

While Sikkim is not completely cut off, access is now possible only through a longer detour via Lava and Gorubathan, where traffic congestion has already built up. The situation worsened after a massive landslide struck Bardang between Singtam and Rangpo, and another roadblock emerged at Taar Khola near Rangpo Check Post, choking all movement.

In addition, the Singtam–Dikchu Road has also been blocked, cutting off several interior regions. Severe damage to roads and bridges has been reported in Tintek Khola, Kokaley, Burtuk, and Chujachen, disrupting local supplies and further complicating the situation.
