Agartala, Aug 18: A tense situation gripped the Tilabazar area of Kailashahar in Unakoti district on Sunday evening after pork and a letter were recovered inside the century-old Tilabazar Jama Masjid in Tripura.
Police intervened promptly and brought the situation under control.
According to reports, the Imam of the mosque first noticed a plastic packet lying on the mosque floor around dusk. When locals opened it, they discovered pork along with a letter.
The letter claimed that Tripura was once a Hindu state, alleging that the land of Tilabazar Jama Masjid originally belonged to Gaur Govinda, where a Hindu temple once stood. It demanded the immediate demolition of the mosque.
Soon after, large numbers of people gathered at the spot. Prominent figures, including Congress senior leader and Gournagar Block vice-chairman Mohammad Badruzzaman, Tripura Waqf Board chairman and former MLA Moboshar Ali, and Tilabazar Gram Panchayat Pradhan Ahiduzzaman, rushed to the site and condemned the incident.
Senior police officials, including Kailashahar SDPO Jayanta Karmakar, Irani police station OC Biraj Debbarma, Additional SP of Unakoti district L. Darlong, and Deputy Magistrate Mati Lal Debbarma, also reached the mosque to assess the situation and ensure security.
Unakoti’s acting Superintendent of Police Avinash Rai also visited the site to take stock of the situation.
Speaking to reporters, Rai said, “Some miscreants are trying to disturb harmony, but after interacting with local residents and community leaders, I am satisfied that both are fully cooperating with the administration in its efforts to trace and arrest those responsible.”
He added that security forces had already been deployed and a case was being registered, expressing confidence that the culprits would be arrested soon.
The SP further appealed to everyone not to spread rumors on social media, assuring that the situation remains completely peaceful.
