Tipra Motha Chief Pradyot Kishore demands ‘Bihar Model’ electoral roll revision in Tripura

Must read

Agartala, July 14: In a significant political development, Tipra Motha supremo and key BJP ally in Tripura, Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, on Sunday called for a ‘Bihar model’ revision of electoral rolls in Tripura ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.

“In Bihar, the Election Commission of India (ECI) conducted a local-level survey and found that many illegal Bangladeshis, as well as individuals from Myanmar and Nepal, were listed in the electoral rolls.

They had obtained Aadhaar cards and other official documents,” said Debbarma.

He added, “Based on ground-level reports, booth-level officers (BLOs) conducting door-to-door checks came across many suspected foreign nationals. We are not claiming it—we’re citing facts published by leading news channels.”

Debbarma further stated, “In Bihar, the names of such illegal migrants are being removed from the voter list. We have decided that Tipra Motha MLAs will jointly submit a memorandum to the ECI, urging them to conduct a similar survey in Tripura.

Unlike Bihar, which borders West Bengal and Nepal, Tripura shares a direct international border with Bangladesh.”

He also alleged that some corrupt government officials had issued Aadhaar cards to illegal migrants in Bihar. “We urge the ECI to conduct the same kind of survey in the Northeast, especially in Tripura, to identify illegal migrants who entered the country unlawfully,” he said.

Debbarma emphasised the importance of including the indigenous Tiprasa people and officials in any such survey conducted in Tripura. “Our people will be best suited to identify illegal migrants who have managed to get enrolled as voters,” he said.

“I fail to understand why Bihar is prioritised while the Northeast is ignored by the Election Commission. Aren’t we also children of India? It’s time for Tipra Motha MLAs to write to the EC and demand the same here,” he posted on Facebook.

He also called on citizens to pressure regional political parties across the Northeast to demand a ‘Bihar model’ revision of electoral rolls.

“I urge all regional political parties of the Northeastern states to press the ECI to implement the ‘Bihar model’ of electoral roll revision,” Debbarma said.
