Tura, July 4: In a move to revive the traditional Comilla Cotton of Garo Hills, the District Agriculture Office, West Garo Hills, organised a one-day workshop on “Modern Cultivation Practices & Future of Comilla Cotton” at Tura on Wednesday.
The workshop, supported under the State Government’s Comilla Cotton Scheme, aimed to promote scientific farming techniques, raise awareness on value addition, and explore market opportunities for the heirloom crop. More than 60 cotton farmers from across West Garo Hills attended the session.

District Agriculture Officer, Paulette A Sangma, who was the Chief Guest, urged farmers to take full advantage of the scheme, calling it the region’s first government-backed initiative for cotton cultivation. She said reviving Comilla Cotton is key not just to preserving culture but also to boosting rural livelihoods.
Sub-Divisional Agriculture Officer A.B. Marak (Dadenggre) also addressed the gathering, highlighting the crop’s economic potential—from traditional wear to fiber-based products—and stressed the need for determination and a progressive outlook among farmers.

The workshop included hands-on training on pest and disease management, and sessions on modern farming practices, productivity enhancement, and sustainable marketing.
The initiative has already seen activities like seed distribution, training programmes, and field demonstrations across all blocks. The long-term goal is to expand cultivation, improve yield, and build Comilla Cotton’s identity in global markets while promoting sustainable farming in Meghalaya.
