Tura, May 16: Several rice dealers from Garo Hills have jointly filed a police complaint of cheating against a wholesale dealer for allegedly diverting a large consignment of rice stock which went missing before it could reach its earmarked destination.
The rice consignment is suspected to be part of the public distribution system in which dealers were supposed to lift the consignment from the wholesaler and sell the same in retail as per the mandated price fixed by the government.
The accused rice dealer, Pintu Prasad of Tura bazaar, is alleged to have shipped the consignment elsewhere and also failed to register the cash returns. He was picked up from his home in Tura bazaar by police on Wednesday evening.
“An FIR of cheating was lodged against him by some rice dealers and we have registered a case and investigation is underway. The accused was brought for questioning,” said West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Dr Dara Aswaghosh.
Police say that the FIR states that Prasad is a manager of a rice company and allegedly cheated the company of revenue. The rice company deals in distribution of rice from wholesale to dealers across different areas of Garo Hills.
Garo Hills has a dubious history of large scale misappropriation of rice meant for the public distribution system where below poverty line beneficiaries are supposed to be provided with quality rice ration for a minimal fee. But in most cases, dealers sell the good rice in the open market for a higher price and provide the beneficiaries with poor quality rice grains
