Tura, Sept 12: The town of Tura, the administrative and commercial hub of the entire Garo Hills region, is expected to have all modern civic amenities; which it has. Except a peculiar spectacle that plays out daily, much to the surprise and annoyance of the residents. This spectacle comprises of mini fountains, and flooded drains and streets, which starts at 3 PM daily and cuts into the black-topped roads, resulting in damage to roads and creation of pot holes.
This strange phenomenon, however, is not a result of the monsoon rains, but rather the leakage of water from the pipes and tanks of PHE and GHADC. This has been going on for several days, some even say for months, but the departments concerned have simply turned a blind to this as they seemingly are busy with more important works!
This spillage has damaged recently repaired roads in the town and interlocked brick pavements. The most disturbing part is probably the formation of pot holes which have, at times, become life threatening. At the same time, this is leading to loss of precious water while many struggle to fetch a bucket of potable water every day.
The responsibility to fix these pipes, however, doesn’t just rely on PHE and GHADC or the Tura Municipal Board but also on the Area Development Committee, which also seems to be maintaining a stoic silence on the issue.
In light of this pressing issue, a pertinent question that arises is: how many times must the roads undergo repairs if these underlying issues remain unresolved?
As one person points out, “The roads in the town can sustain more years but such condition of roads due to underground leaks and overground fountains and manmade streams deteriorates the scenario” is indeed one way to put things into perspective.
The Hub News team has extensively documented instances of aged and leaking pipes in areas like Bazar, Nakam Bazar, Beldarpara, and Akonggre Chandmari, which require immediate attention of the concerned authorities. However, the question still remains: will the authorities act or allow the town’s streets to crumble further till tragedy strikes.
