Shillong, Aug 17: Defender Alisha Lyngdoh and midfielder Bonifilia Shullai from Meghalaya have earned places in the Indian squad for the upcoming SAFF U-17 Women’s Championship in Bhutan. While this marks Alisha’s maiden call-up to the national side, Bonifilia is set for her second international stint, having earlier represented the country at the U-16 level.
The 23-member squad, led by Swedish coach Joakim Alexandersson, was unveiled on Sunday. Alexandersson recently steered the Indian U-20 women’s team to a historic qualification for the AFC U-20 Women’s Asian Cup and now turns his focus to guiding the U-17s ahead of their continental qualifiers in Kyrgyzstan this October.

The championship, hosted in Thimphu from August 20 to 31, introduces a fresh double round-robin format featuring four teams—India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. Each side will play six matches, with the team topping the table declared champions.
The Indian girls—nicknamed the Young Tigresses—will kick off their campaign against Nepal on August 20, followed by fixtures against Bangladesh on August 22, Bhutan on August 24 and 27, Nepal again on August 29, and Bangladesh in the concluding clash on August 31. All matches will be staged at the Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu.
