Two killed, several injured in explosion at scrap dealer’s shop in Assam’s Jorhat

Guwahati, March 28: Two persons were killed and several others injured in a powerful explosion at a scrap dealer’s shop in the Rajamaidam New Colony area of Jorhat district on Saturday. The incident comes days ahead of the elections in the state.

According to initial reports, a man identified as Noor Mohammad died on the spot. The impact of the blast was severe, with his body badly mutilated, indicating the intensity of the explosion.

Two children—eight-year-old Mohammad Iqbal and 12-year-old Sehnaj Begum—were critically injured and rushed to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

Iqbal later succumbed to his injuries, taking the death toll to two, while the girl remains in critical condition.

A woman, identified as Noorjahan Begum, also sustained minor injuries in the incident.

Police teams reached the spot soon after the blast and have launched an investigation. The exact cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained, with authorities probing all possible angles.

The incident has triggered panic in the locality, with residents expressing safety concerns. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
