Shillong, March 28: Around 300 farmers, along with students and stakeholders, participated in a capacity-building programme on horticulture organised by the Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Community and Skill Development Center (DDUCC), a constituent college of North-Eastern Hill University, at Wahiajer in Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills.
Titled “Skill Enhancement for Horticultural Development and Sustainability for Farmers of NEH Region,” the programme was held in collaboration with NEHU’s Tura campus and supported with horticultural inputs from ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research.
The initiative aimed to equip farmers with modern horticultural practices, promote nutrient-rich crop cultivation, and encourage sustainable livelihoods—particularly among youth and women.
Technical sessions were led by experts including Prof. C. P. Suresh of NEHU and Agriculture Development Officer Phoida Rymbai. Participants engaged in interactive training on advanced farming techniques, with a focus on improving productivity and promoting health-oriented crops.
The valedictory session was attended by Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who lauded the university’s efforts in strengthening grassroots skills. He urged farmers to apply the knowledge gained to become self-reliant entrepreneurs and contribute to the region’s economic growth.
Dr. T. Sakthivel of IIHR highlighted the Northeast’s strong potential for horticulture and proposed continued institutional support to develop crop-specific hubs, particularly for tomatoes and avocados. Prof. S. K. Barik of NEHU emphasized the importance of leveraging government schemes and adopting improved practices to boost farm outcomes.
The programme concluded with the distribution of horticultural inputs and seedlings to participants—most of them women farmers—marking a step toward strengthening sustainable agriculture in the region.
Organisers said the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to disseminate IIHR technologies across the Northeast and build resilient, community-driven farming systems.
