Dibrugarh, Jan 10: Two cadres of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland–Khaplang (NSCN-K) — Ang Mai (AM) faction — were killed in a mortar attack at Khamtiang village in the Pangsau area of Myanmar on Friday.

The deceased have been identified as Lieutenant Avi Pochury and Sergeant Peyao Konyak.

According to sources, the attack was carried out by cadres of the rival NSCN-K (Yung Aung faction) while the victims were on duty.

The mortar shelling reportedly caused fatal injuries, killing both cadres on the spot.

Factional clashes are common within the NSCN, and sources attributed the latest incident to long-standing rivalry between the groups.

“These groups often infiltrate the Indian side through jungle routes, entering via the Pangsau Pass area before carrying out activities across the border,” a source said.

Officials added that such cadres frequently enter Arunachal Pradesh, where incidents of extortion and kidnapping are reported.

“Extortion and kidnappings are common in parts of Arunachal Pradesh, and cadres of these groups have been involved in such activities, often demanding high ransoms,” an official said.
