Shillong, Sept 16: United Democratic Party (UDP) supremo Metbah Lyngdoh has downplayed the party’s decision to drop Paul Lyngdoh and Kyrmen Shylla as cabinet ministers, stating that the move is part of a broader effort to share responsibilities among the legislators of the party.

The UDP has 12 MLAs in the 60-member Assembly.

Speaking after being sworn in as a cabinet minister, Lyngdoh said, “We are here to move ahead and to be with chief minister and to continue with the journey of MDA 2.”

When asked about the reason behind dropping the two ministers, Lyngdoh said, “There is no reason of dropping anyone, it is basically sharing of responsibilities and I think that is the right appropriate approach as far as my personal opinion is concerned which is being expressed by all the elected members and party as a whole.”

He further clarified that there was no agreement on sharing responsibilities after two and a half years.

“We never had any kind of agreement, never in the past also, so it was never needed to have an agreement,” he added.

Lyngdoh emphasized that the UDP is a united party and will continue to remain so.

“To be very clear, as of today, and I believe that even in the future also, the party as a whole, we are one, there is no division or whatever you say. We are united and we will continue to be united as one,” he said.

Lyngdoh explained that the decision to reshuffle the cabinet was taken after consulting all stakeholders, including MLAs, MDCs, and party officials.

“I had made it very clear that this is the opinion and view of all stakeholders of the party, right from MLAs, MDCs, party officials, who are part of the process, and everybody has been taken on board for any kind of thing, and unanimously, a decision has been taken,” he added.

When asked about Paul Lyngdoh’s absence from the swearing-in ceremony, Lyngdoh said that Lyngdoh had some official work to attend to as his last day as minister.

“Today is the last day for him as minister, there are few things for him to clear up, so he could not attend this swearing ceremony,” Lyngdoh explained.
