Shillong, Jan 31: The United Democratic Party (UDP) would soon meet to discuss the preparation for the upcoming elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), slated to be held on April 9.

“We are firm in contesting the GHADC polls but we are yet to decide as to from how many seats will put up candidates,” UDP general secretary, Jemino Mawthoh said here.

He informed that leaders of the party will soon meet in Shillong and Garo Hills to chalk out the action plan for the elections.

Asked, Mawthoh said, “Even though the UDP do not have any MLA or MDC from Garo Hills at present but we are proud that the party still has its vote share.”

Stating that the winnability factor is important, the UDP leader said that the party will consult with all the district presidents in Garo Hills to ensure that potential candidates are given tickets.

On being asked if the UDP is open for a pre-poll alliance, Mawthoh however said that the party is not interested in a tie-up with any political parties as it prefers to fight alone in the upcoming elections.

UDP general secretary added that the party’s decision to contest in the GHADC polls is to bring good governance in the district council. According to him, many allegations have been hurled at the previous executive committee.

“We need to clean up the system in the GHADC and we also need to make sure that no corruption is allowed to take place,” said Mawthoh.

Mawthoh said that UDP is strongly against corruption and also extended its full support to the inquiry instituted by the state government against the alleged misappropriation of funds by the GHADC.
