UNLF, Manipur’s oldest rebel group signs peace pact with govt, Amit Shah calls it historic milestone

Imphal, Nov 30: The government signed a peace agreement with United National Liberation Front (UNLF) on Wednesday.

An official spokesperson said that the representatives of the UNLF signed the agreement with senior officials of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and Manipur government, UNLF is Manipur’s oldest militant organisation dominated by the majority Meitei community, under which the rebel group has agreed to renounce violence.

This comes days after the ban on the group under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) was extended for five years.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in a post on X, “The peace agreement signed today with the UNLF by the Government of India and the Government of Manipur marks the end of a six-decade-long armed movement.

It is a landmark achievement in realising PM Narendra Modi’s vision of all-inclusive development and providing a better future to the youths in Northeast India.”

Quoting Amit Shah’s post, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “The UNLF peace agreement stands as a historic milestone, set to invigorate peace and progress in the North East. It reflects HM Amit Shah’s unwavering commitment to fostering complete stability in the region, guided by the leadership of PM Modi.”
