USTM seminar explores roadblocks and reforms for women’s leadership in governance

Must read

Shillong, June 24: Modern women are breaking barriers and shattering stereotypes, stepping into leadership roles and making significant strides across diverse fields. Yet, despite these advancements, women continue to face systemic disparities in nearly every sector.

In response to the persistent challenges confronting women in everyday life, the Research Project Team of the University of Science & Technology Meghalaya (USTM) organised a two-day seminar titled Women’s Leadership in Governance on June 20–21 (Friday and Saturday). The event brought together eminent journalists, scholars, policymakers, researchers, and students from across the eight Northeastern states and beyond. It served as an engaging platform to deliberate on the current status, challenges, and prospects of women’s leadership in governance.

The seminar commenced with a warm welcome address by Seminar cum Project Coordinator, Dr. Himashree Patowary.

Renowned journalist and Editor of The Shillong Times, Ms. Patricia Mukhim, delivered a compelling keynote address, critically examining the structural barriers and sociocultural norms that limit women’s access to leadership positions. She advocated for robust policy interventions to create a more equitable democratic space for women.

Speaking on the perception of the Northeast’s so-called “queen culture,” she remarked: “That is romanticising. That’s the undercurrent many outsiders fail to see. If women don’t participate at the grassroots level of politics, how can we expect them to reach the Legislature or the District Council? While we’re often told we are privileged, we also experience domestic violence and the same struggles faced by women across India.”

Ms. Mukhim concluded her address on an encouraging note to the host institution:
“Just be the best. I want to see USTM grow from strength to strength despite all the challenges you face.”

Among other distinguished speakers, the Guest of Honour, Prof. Sambit Mallick, discussed the theoretical underpinnings of gender mainstreaming, governance reform, and context-specific strategies for empowering women.

The seminar featured dynamic discussions and the presentation of over 60 research papers, covering themes such as women’s roles in local governance, gender budgeting, political participation, and leadership in tribal societies.

The valedictory session included thoughtful reflections and academic insights, with many notable contributors sharing their perspectives.
