Uttarakhand CM assures justice to family of Tripura student killed in Dehradun; leaders across the country condemn ‘racial violence’

Must read

Guwahati, Dec 29: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday spoke to Tarun Prasad Chakma, father of Tripura student Anjel Chakma, who died in Dehradun following a brutal assault allegedly linked to racial abuse.

During the phone conversation, Dhami termed the incident “regrettable” and assured the family of strict action. He said all accused persons had been arrested except one, a Nepali national who is currently absconding. “A reward has been announced for his capture, and a team has been sent to apprehend him,” the chief minister said, adding that the culprits would face the harshest possible punishment.

Dhami also said he had spoken to Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, and that senior national leaders were monitoring the case. “We are with the family in this hour of need and will provide all possible assistance,” he added.

Political leaders across the country strongly condemned the killing. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi described the incident as a “horrific hate crime,” warning against the normalisation of hate through divisive narratives. “India is built on respect and unity, not fear and abuse,” he said, expressing solidarity with the Chakma family and the people of the Northeast.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the death of Anjel Chakma was “heartbreaking and unacceptable.”

“Racial violence must not be tolerated. People from the Northeast are as Indian as every citizen of this country. Racism should never be normalised, and the perpetrators must be punished,” Sangma said, offering his condolences to the bereaved family.

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma echoed similar concerns, stating that the tragedy highlighted the continuing discrimination faced by people from the Northeast in parts of mainland India, and stressed that racial prejudice has no place in the Constitution.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also condemned the incident, calling it “heartbreaking and unacceptable,” and urged the Uttarakhand government to ensure swift and strict action against those responsible.

The death of Anjel Chakma has once again brought national focus on the safety of students from the Northeast studying outside the region and the persistent issue of racial abuse in parts of the country.
