Guwahati, Dec 29: A 35-year-old man was allegedly lynched by a group of people on suspicion of theft in the Hatimura area of Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati. Police have arrested seven persons in connection with the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Farjul Alom (35), son of Abdul Jabbar, a resident of Alisinga village in the Uriamguri-Barghat area under Tezpur police station in Sonitpur district.
The arrested accused have been identified as Mustafizur Hoque (18) of Pub Bobosola under Sipajhar police station in Darrang district; Chitra Das (28) of Bordoloini under Mayong police station in Kamrup (Metro); Ram Sunar (32) of Namdung Koilori under Margherita police station in Tinsukia district; Sushil Nath (28) of Hatighuli under Gaurisagar police station in Sivasagar district; Stayjit Haloi (26) of Sathikuchi under Tihu police station in Kamrup (Metro); Ranjit Brahma (35) of North Gadhuligaon under Simla police station in Baksa district; and Manab Roy (25) of Bordoloini under Mayong police station in Morigaon district.
According to police, information was received from Hatimura in Sonapur about a suspected theft incident in which a man was restrained and assaulted by members of the public. A police team rushed to the spot, took the injured man into custody, and admitted him to Sonapur District Hospital.
As his condition deteriorated, he was referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Bhangagarh, where doctors declared him brought dead.
A case has been registered at Sonapur police station (Case No. 216/2025) under Sections 117(4) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by a group) and 103(2) (mob lynching) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Preliminary inquiry has revealed that the victim was allegedly assaulted by employees of Mairas Resort. All seven accused have been arrested and produced before the court for further legal proceedings.
