Imphal, Apr 22: A Village Defence Force (VDF) personnel of the Manipur Home Department sustained a bullet injury after police opened fire to disperse a large crowd at Wangjing Tentha in Manipur’s Thoubal district on Tuesday.

The injured has been identified as Elangbam Nandbir Singh (40), who serves as a Village Defence Force Special Police Officer (VDF SPO) with Alpha Company.

Singh suffered a bullet injury to his abdomen and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. A resident of Heirok Part 2, Elangbam Leirak in Thoubal district, he was rushed to Raj Medicity Hospital in Imphal for treatment.

According to reports, the incident took place during the Manipur Chief Minister’s visit to the southern district of Thoubal.

According to a police statement, during the Chief Minister’s visit, a large group of individuals armed with stones and catapults advanced towards the function site with the apparent intent to vandalize the newly constructed Block Development Office.

Despite repeated warnings and appeals by police personnel, the crowd continued to move aggressively, posing a serious threat to public property, dignitaries, and overall law and order.

Police said that in view of the escalating situation, minimum necessary force was applied.

As a last resort, controlled firing was undertaken in strict adherence to established protocols to disperse the mob and neutralize the threat.
