Guwahati, Oct 30: Veteran artist Syed Sadulla, a legendary figure in Assamese music and culture, passed away on Thursday morning at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
He was 77. The multifaceted singer, lyricist, composer, and former radio announcer had been battling a serious blood-related disorder and was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday. He remained in critical condition until his demise at 10:30 AM.
Born on February 1, 1948, in Dibrugarh district, Sadulla was renowned for his rich baritone voice. His distinguished career included being the first English newsreader for All India Radio (AIR), Dibrugarh. He was also the familiar voice behind hundreds of radio and television programs and a key member of the iconic 1960s band, The Quivers.
In 1965, a group of students from Dibrugarh Kanoi College formed The Quivers, a musical band that created a cultural wave across Assam. The members included accordionist Bhabesh Goswami, guitarist Syed Sadulla, late actor Biju Phukan, lyricist and playwright Hemanta Dutta, musician Rajen Gohain, late artist Prabin Goswami, and guitarists Ziaur Rahman, Nazifur Rahman, among others.
The band quickly rose to prominence and received recognition from All India Radio in 1967. The Quivers were celebrated not only for their Western music influences but also for their innovative fusion of indigenous Assamese melodies, which offered listeners a refreshing musical experience.
The Quivers embodied the spirit of youthful passion for music. Their sound soon travelled across Assam, making them cultural icons of the era.
His associates say Sadulla’s guitar and his deep, emotive voice on AIR Dibrugarh made him immortal in the hearts of listeners. He was one of the pioneering musicians who introduced rock music to Assam, setting the stage ablaze through the late 1960s and 1970s.
Over the decades, his soulful voice, poignant lyrics, and melodious compositions touched countless hearts, cementing his place among Assam’s most beloved artists.
In recognition of his immense contribution to Assamese music, the Sadin-Pratidin Group recently honoured him with the Achiever Music Award.
“I’ve lost one of my closest friends. I met him in college, and since then, we have remained close. I was one of the band members of The Quivers. We performed across Assam and received overwhelming love from people. The death of Syed Sadulla is an irreparable loss for the music industry,” said Rajen Gohain, renowned musician and fellow member of The Quivers.
