Shillong, July 31: Naik Niren Pambah, an ex-serviceman from Marngar in Ri Bhoi district, has successfully launched a car wash centre in his village and now plans to set up a Maruti service outlet. Today, he is urging fellow veterans to seize the opportunities available through government schemes to build independent livelihoods.

Pambah’s entrepreneurial journey was highlighted at an outreach programme aimed at connecting Ex-Servicemen (ESMs) with government schemes and entrepreneurial support systems. The event, held at the Rhino Auditorium under the aegis of the Veterans’ Cell, 101 Area Headquarters, brought together key institutions including PRIME Meghalaya, Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA), CM Elevate, the Fisheries Department, and Meghalaya Rural Bank. Representatives shared insights on financial assistance and schemes tailored for veterans aspiring to start new ventures.

Col. Darryl Hopkins (Retd.), Director of the Sainik Welfare Board, Meghalaya, stressed the importance of such initiatives, noting that many ESMs retire without clear direction or access to economic opportunities. “This programme is about giving them the information and confidence to chart new paths,” he said.

MBMA Senior Manager Liza Kharpomtiah highlighted the need to engage young and energetic retirees in productive pursuits. She also introduced an upcoming CM Elevate initiative focused on adventure sports—an area well-suited for fit and motivated former soldiers.

The programme marked a significant step in Meghalaya’s efforts to ensure that those who once served the nation transition smoothly into meaningful second careers.
