Boko, March 31: Campaigning for the upcoming Assembly elections intensified in the No. 28 Boko–Chaygaon (ST) constituency on Tuesday, as BTR Chief Hagrama Mohilary and Assam Cabinet Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah addressed a large rally in support of NDA candidate Raju Mech.

The leaders arrived by helicopter at Boko Gandhi Maidan around 3:00 PM and joined a high-energy campaign meeting attended by thousands of supporters from across communities. Several key figures were present, including South Kamrup BJP president Anjan Goswami, AGP leader and former Boko MLA Jyoti Prasad Das, Rabha Hasong Joint Forum leaders Sumit Rabha and Ramakanta Rabha, and Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council chairman Sonaram Rabha. Alliance partners, including the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Rabha Hasong Joint Forum, have thrown their weight behind Mech’s candidature.

Addressing the gathering, Raju Mech urged voters to support the BJP, describing voting for the party as “a virtuous act, like going on a pilgrimage.” He expressed confidence that Boko would elect a BJP MLA for the first time.

Hagrama Mohilary, campaigning as a star leader, drew attention to the significant participation of women at the rally. In his characteristic style, he remarked that the presence of women signified the arrival of “Goddess Lakshmi” for the BJP. Switching between Assamese, Hindi, and Bodo, Mohilary assured voters of continued support, saying that even beyond his role as BTR Chief, he would remain accessible if their elected representative failed to deliver. He also highlighted ongoing infrastructure initiatives, including the construction of Bodoland guest houses across the country, adding that similar projects could be extended to the Boko-Chaygaon constituency if needed. He urged voters to back Mech on April 9, ahead of Bohag Bihu.

Cabinet Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, meanwhile, focused on welfare schemes, particularly those targeting women. Criticising the Congress, he contrasted what he described as traditional giveaways with direct financial benefits under BJP-led initiatives.

He remarked “If you vote for Congress, you will get lungis, caps, thread, and blankets. But if you vote for BJP, you will receive ₹9,000, ₹10,000, ₹25,000, or even up to ₹50,000.”

Baruah said that if the BJP returns to power and Mech is elected, women in the constituency would receive ₹25,000 initially, followed by ₹50,000. He also promised that essential commodities such as pulses, sugar, salt, and mustard oil—currently subsidised—would be provided free of cost in the future.

With senior leaders stepping up campaigning and alliance partners consolidating support, the contest in Boko-Chaygaon is shaping up to be a closely watched battle in the upcoming polls.
