Dibrugarh/ Guwahati March 31:  The BJP on Tuesday stepped up its campaign for the Assam Assembly elections, with star campaigners  Devendra Fadnavis, Smriti Irani and Rajnath Singh addressing rallies in different parts of the state.

In Dibrugarh, Fadnavis campaigned for BJP candidate and Assam Power Minister Prasanta Phukan, backing the party’s “double engine” pitch and highlighting development works in Upper Assam, including the move to make Dibrugarh the second capital.

“The double engine government ensures development reaches every doorstep,” he said, urging voters to re-elect Phukan with a strong mandate.

Addressing a large gathering, Fadnavis strongly pitched the BJP’s “double engine” model—where the same party governs both the Centre and the state—as the driving force behind Assam’s rapid development.

He praised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his leadership, particularly highlighting the government’s tough stance on infiltration and its efforts to protect the land rights of indigenous communities.

“The double engine government ensures development reaches every doorstep. Under Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership, Assam is witnessing unprecedented progress,” Fadnavis said.

The rally struck a lively note early on, with Phukan welcoming Fadnavis by singing the popular Hindi number “Bambai se aaya mera dost…”, drawing loud applause from the crowd.

Closing his address, Fadnavis urged voters to re-elect Phukan with a decisive mandate.

“Prasanta Phukan has been a pillar of strength for this constituency. To maintain the pace of development in Dibrugarh, the lotus must win again—this time by one lakh votes,” he said.

Former Union minister Smriti Irani on Tuesday said that the Assam Assembly elections 2026 this time were about “chasing out every infiltrator” from the country, while accusing the Congress of shielding the illegal migrants and covering the state under “dark clouds” of militancy.

Smriti Irani maintained that the BJP-led government has ensured progress for the state on all fronts, with women especially leading the development narrative now.

Addressing a campaign rally for the party’s Sissiborgaon constituency candidate Jibon Gogoi, Irani said, “This election is not about making someone an MLA or Himanta Biswa Sarma the chief minister again.

Invoking Assam’s turbulent past, Irani referred to the Dhemaji blast of August 15, 2004, where several civilians, including children, lost their lives. She described the period as one marked by fear and instability, alleging that such conditions prevailed under previous regimes.

She claimed that the situation has significantly improved under the current BJP-led governments at the Centre and in the state, adding that people can now celebrate national events without fear.

Targeting the Congress, Irani alleged that the opposition party has been protecting infiltrators and questioned its opposition to the revision of electoral rolls ahead of the elections.

“Only Indians should be in the electoral rolls. When the Election Commission initiated a revision, why did Congress protest? Do they want to protect Indians or infiltrators?” she asked.

Meanwhile, campaigning in Dergaon, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh focused on development, identity, and governance, while launching a sharp attack on the Congress.

Praising Assam’s transformation, Singh said the state has moved from a past marked by insurgency and neglect to one driven by infrastructure growth and industrial ambition. He credited the BJP-led governments for boosting connectivity, healthcare, and investment, and set an ambitious लक्ष्य of taking Assam’s economy to USD 150 billion by 2030.

“Earlier, Assam was associated with poverty and insurgency. Today, it is on the path of peace and rapid development,” Singh said, while also reiterating the party’s stance against illegal immigration and its commitment to protecting Assamese identity.

With senior leaders campaigning across constituencies, the BJP is stepping up its campaign ahead of the polls.
