Wild Asiatic bear rescued after seven-hour operation in Assam’s Mariani

Must read

Dibrugarh, May 19: Forest officials and wildlife experts on Tuesday managed to tranquilise and rescue a wild Asiatic bear after a nearly seven-hour long and meticulous operation in Assam’s Jorhat district.

The mature male bear had drawn public attention and created a scare in the Doklongia Dekagaon area of Mariani in the evening as it was spotted at about 5:30 am lying under a bamboo grove near a resident’s verandah.

The locals, alerted to the incident, had thronged near the locality, prompting the forest officials to ask them to keep away from the animal as it posed a danger.

“We were horrified when we saw the bear crouching near the bamboo grove behind our house and immediately informed the forest department and shut the doors to our homes,” said local resident Mukul Saikia.

The forest personnel soon cordonned off the area and a specialist veterinary team from the Kaziranga National Park was called to assist in the mission.

The operation was made difficult as the bear was found in a densely populated area of houses and not out in the open, risking an attack or an attempt by the animal to protect itself with aggression.

The joint team was, however, finally able to tranquilise and rescue the bear at about 1 p.m without any resident or rescuer being hurt in the process. Forest department sources felt that the animal, which had strayed from a nearby forest range, had wandered into the residential area likely in search of food and shelter. Medical tests will be conducted on the animal before its release into the wild.
