Shillong, July 4: Women entrepreneurs from Northeast were encouraged to think creatively, identify local challenges, and explore entrepreneurial solutions at the Swavalambini women entrepreneurship awareness programme held recently at North Eastern Hill University, Shillong.
This is the first regional outreach following the successful inauguration of the Swavalambini Pilot Project by NITI Aayog.The pilot initiative spans five states nationwide, including three northeastern states—Assam, Meghalaya, and Mizoram.
Organized under the Swavalambini banner—an MSDE–NITI Aayog initiative and implemented locally by NEHU’s Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC) and the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), Guwahati—the programme aimed to introduce women to entrepreneurship and encourage innovative, self-reliant career paths. The event marked a significant step toward fostering a culture of women-led startups in the Northeastern region.
The programme had interactive discussions, real-life case studies, and motivational talks.
The programme follows a structured model: a two-day Entrepreneurship Awareness Programme (EAP) for 600 students, followed by an intensive 40-hour Women Entrepreneurship Development/Entrepreneurship Development Programme (WEDP/EDP) for 300 selected participants, and culminating in six months of mentorship support. This awareness session laid the groundwork for upcoming workshops, training sessions, and incubation support under Swavalambini.
Young women entrepreneurs also showcased a variety of products—from food and beverages to textiles, handlooms, soft toys, and décor—illustrating the diversity of ventures being nurtured.
The event highlighted the programme’s focus on empowering women to take risks, lead with purpose, and create long-term societal impact.
