Shillong, Oct 16: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday emphasised that Meghalaya’s young population is its strength.

“85 percent of our population is below the age of 45. The youth are our greatest strength and asset and we have initiated programme that channelise the strength of our youth,” he said

Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Meghalaya Skill and Innovation Hub in Shillong, the CM highlighted government’s support to entrepreneurship. He said the skill and innovation hub is being set up to address the requirement of manpower shortage.

He stated that the government has different programmes through which youth are given trainings, so that they are able to contribute productively towards the growth of the state.

Talking on promoting rural entrepreneurs, the chief minister said that government organises various business plan competitions and supports entrepreneurs. “We provide support and handholding to our entrepreneurs through programmes like CM Elevate, and provide financial subsidies,” he added.

Vice-President of India praises Meghalaya CM

Earlier, the Vice-President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, commended Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for spearheading initiatives that aim to nurture the untapped potential of the state’s youth.

He also praised the establishment of the Meghalaya Skill and Innovation Hub, a centre designed to enhance youth entrepreneurship and skill development. He noted that “skill is neither discovered nor innovated; it is the optimal exploitation of talent” that gives human resources their cutting edge.

He stressed that youth are “the most vital contributors and significant stakeholders” in India’s journey to becoming a developed nation by 2047.

In this context, skilling is no longer a luxury but a necessity, he emphasized, stressing that the hub would play a critical role in nurturing local entrepreneurship and fostering industry collaborations.

The Meghalaya Skill and Innovation Hub will be constructed on a 6.54-acre site in New Shillong at a cost of Rs 77.5 crore. The facility is envisioned as a training and incubation centre, providing opportunities for collaboration and partnerships between the youth and industries.

Dhankhar reiterated that skilling the youth is the “need of the time” and expressed confidence that with the support of the new innovation hub and ongoing entrepreneurial efforts, Meghalaya’s young population would significantly contribute to the state’s growth and prosperity.
