₹1.5-Crore SP office in Nagaland’s Zunheboto remains locked six years after completion

Must read

Zunheboto, June 30: A new Superintendent of Police (SP) office in Nagaland’s Zunheboto, constructed at a cost of ₹1.5 crore, has remained non-functional six years after its completion, forcing police personnel and the public to continue using the old, congested office premises.

The new building at the Police Reserve was completed in 2019 and was virtually inaugurated in August 2023 by Yanthungo Patton, who also holds the Home and Border Affairs portfolio. However, nearly three years after the inauguration, the office remains locked and unused.

Superintendent of Police Dr. Kupe Kupfo said the department has been unable to shift to the new premises due to the absence of proper boundary fencing, which poses a major security concern for storing sensitive police records and official documents.

He also cited poor network connectivity at the site as another key reason preventing the office from becoming operational.
As a result, police personnel continue to work from the ageing SP office, where inadequate infrastructure and severe space constraints have affected the smooth functioning of official duties.

The delay has also inconvenienced the public, who continue to access police services from the old building instead of the modern facility that was intended to improve service delivery.

Residents have questioned why essential requirements such as security fencing and communication infrastructure were not put in place before the building was inaugurated.

The prolonged non-utilisation of the office has sparked concerns over infrastructure planning and execution, with citizens urging the government to resolve the pending issues and make the new SP office operational without further delay.

“The building has been completed and inaugurated, but it still remains locked while the public and police personnel continue to suffer,” a resident said, reflecting growing frustration over the delay.
