Guwahati, Feb 5: A traffic sub-inspector was killed and at least 15 others were injured after a speeding vehicle ploughed into on-duty police personnel and civilians at Samdang Tea Estate Bypass Chariali under Doomdooma Police Station in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district on Wednesday evening.
The deceased officer has been identified as SI Bubul Sonowal, who was in charge of traffic at Doomdooma Police Station.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred while SI Sonowal and other police personnel were regulating traffic following an earlier road accident at the Doomdooma Bypass involving a vehicle (AS-23-G-3375) and a Splendour motorcycle. A crowd had gathered at the spot after the initial collision.
During this time, a speeding Mahindra KUV 100 (AR-11A-5334), reportedly coming from the Tinsukia side, lost control and crashed into the on-duty police personnel and civilians standing nearby.
At least 12 civilians sustained injuries in the impact, taking the total number of injured to 15, including police personnel. All the injured were rushed to the Doomdooma FRU for treatment.
SI Sonowal, who was critically injured in the crash, was later referred to Apeksha Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the offending vehicle, identified as Sokailolum Yun, son of the late Ratso Yun and a resident of Pirah Manchal in Arunachal Pradesh’s Anjaw district, has been apprehended. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
