21 illegal migrants from Bangladesh pushed back: Assam CM

Must read

Guwahati, March 2: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that 21 illegal migrants from Bangladesh were pushed back to the neighbouring country in the early hours of the day.

Taking to X, Sarma stated, “Alert eyes. Midnight action. At 12:30 AM sharp, 21 illegal migrants were sent back to their respective countries, thanks to the ever-watchful @sribhumipolice.”

Describing it as one of the biggest pushback operations in recent months, the Chief Minister said the migrants were returned soon after being apprehended.
“Apprehended. Documented. Sent back home. Seems like while most people were dreaming, our police were wide awake doing the night shift for the nation. Sleep can wait when duty calls,” he wrote.

Those pushed back included at least six children and several women.

Following recent unrest in Bangladesh, security forces and police in Assam have foiled multiple infiltration attempts along the India-Bangladesh border. The state government has adopted a policy of pushing back illegal migrants from the border itself.

Sribhumi district in south Assam’s Barak Valley continues to remain one of the most vulnerable sectors for infiltration attempts. In September last year, 39 illegal infiltrators were pushed back in a single operation from the Sribhumi sector to Bangladesh.
