Tura, April 19: Health and surveillance teams have temporarily sealed the Tura NEHU campus to undergo contact testing and tracing in the wake of three Covid-19 infection cases being detected on Sunday.
Among the three infected is also the head of NEHU, Pro Vice-Chancellor G Saingaiah, who is now inside the Covid treatment ward of Tura Civil Hospital undergoing treatment. Prof. Saingaiah is a patient of high blood pressure.
West Garo Hills deputy commissioner issued a statement informing of the temporary closure of the university so as to allow surveillance teams to begin contact tracing and testing.
“It will be with all probability for two days to allow the teams to complete the tracing and testing. There are three cases of infection including the Pro VC,” confirmed DC Ram Singh.
He further mentioned that the possible suspect of the infection cannot be ruled out from a recently arrived academician to the campus.
As per reports, one of the NEHU professors who was away in Hyderabad had only last week arrived on the campus. He had met with the Pro Vice-Chancellor and another university member and all three were found positive, soon after.
To prevent any possible spread of the infection and contain an outbreak, the authorities have decided to go for its total closure until the tracing and testing is completed.
